As we look back at the Summer of 2014 it was a busy time at the Chamber! Many of you attended our tours, events and business luncheons. Thank you for coming and thank you to our many members, sponsors and volunteers who supported the Chamber to help make them a success!
32nd Anniversary Gala – A Journey Through the Past and Into the Future

Chinatown Herbalist Tour
The Chinatown Herbalist Tour made its debut on September 27th. Those in attendance were treated to a fascinating tour of two herbal stores where they learned about the various types of herbs and which ailments they cured. They also learned about specialty teas and visited a clinic to learn about acupuncture, cupping and other forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Quarterly Luncheon Featuring Judy Baar Topinka
Judy Barr Topinka, Illinois State Comptroller was the featured speaker at the Chamber’s Business Luncheon on October 16th. Over 100 guests attended the luncheon held at Triple Crown Restaurant. The Chamber hosts business luncheons throughout the year featuring prominent speakers in various industries.
Concierge Dinner Tour
The Chamber hosted a Concierge Dinner Tour on September 17th which attracted over 40 concierges from the city and suburbs. The concierges arrived via trolleys from downtown and also by Chicago Water Taxi. They learned about the history of Chinatown during a trolley tour, attended the opening reception at Triple Crown Restaurant, dined at one of the four designated restaurants: BBQ King, Evergreen, Flaming Pot, and Lao You Ju. The closing reception was held at the recently opened Heritage Museum of Chinese Art. Chinatown is definitely on the concierge’s list of recommendations to their guests.
US Department of Commerce
On September 7th, in partnership with the US Department of Commerce, the Chamber hosted a delegation of representatives from Guangzhou China who were in town to attend the International Manufacturing and Technology Show at McCormick Place. Chicago Water Taxi provided a chartered boat and docent led tour along the Chicago River to Chinatown’s Ping Tom Memorial Park. The delegation was given a tour through Chinatown followed by a delicious dinner at Evergreen Restaurant. The delegation had high praises for the city and the Chamber. The Chamber looks forward to more collaboration with the USDOC in the future.
Chicago Oriental Wholesale Market
New Chamber member, Chicago Oriental Wholesale Market, broke ground on its new warehouse facility on September 15th. This is an expansion of their current business located on Canal Street. Mr. Lam, owner of Chicago Oriental Wholesale Market stated it was important for him to remain in the Chinatown area to continue building on the success of the community.
The Goodman theatre
The Chamber worked with The Goodman Theatre to promote their production of “The World of Extreme Happiness”. This play received excellent reviews was enjoyed by many.Blue Man Group Discount Tickets! Call for Artists – New Chinatown Branch Library
The City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), working with the Chicago Public Library and the community, invites professional artists who live and/or work in the Chicagoland area to submit their interest in a public art commission for the new Chinatown Branch Library. The application deadline is 10:59pm CST, November 6, 2014. For more information, click here.
Four Star Bike & Chow
The Active Transportation Alliance’s Four Star Bike & Chow ride brought over 20,000 riders through Chinatown on September 7th. Local restaurants including New Furama and Phoenix provided food bites to the riders at their last rest stop at Ping Tom Memorial Park.
DePaul University’s Visit
On September 3rd, students from DePaul University’s "Chicago Business & Society" Class visited Chinatown and the Chamber. They toured the neighborhood, dined on regional cuisine and learned about how the Chamber, local business and the community work together.
The Chinatown Chamber of Commerce hosted a cheering section at the Chicago Marathon on October 12th. Our volunteers cheered on the 40,000 plus runners along Wentworth Ave.
