St. Barbara Elementary School was established in 1910 has provided quality education in the Bridgeport community for more than 100 years and has been a member of the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce since June 2016. They became a member of the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce in the hopes that the Chinatown community will come to know more about what St. Barbara Elementary school offers. The school includes preschool through eighth grade. The school’s strong academic program helps teachers strive to prepare the school’s students for success. While mathematics is the core strength of the school, students do well in all academic areas. The writing process begins in kindergarten, ensuring each student’s proficiency in writing at all grade levels.

Students from St. Barbara Elementary School have performed above the national average on Terra Nova standardized tests. The early childhood curriculum includes the Rowland Reading Program, EveryDay Math (University of Chicago), STEM Science, and the school’s recognized art program. St. Barbara teachers and staff believe all of their students are unique and have the potential to achieve great academic accomplishments in the classroom. It is also important that students participate in a variety of activities outside of the classroom to give them creative, athletic, and social interactions with each other and the community.

Because St. Barbara Elementary School has a diverse religious student body, including non-Christians, non-Catholics are welcomed and encouraged to participate in all religious experiences including Liturgy. The faculty and staff go beyond classroom teaching, setting examples and modeling their faith, teaching respect and tolerance for all faiths.

The school embraces the city’s culture through field trips to the opera, the symphony, and the Art Institute. These opportunities help students develop leadership, sportsmanship, teamwork, and a strong sense of commitment. St. Barbara School is recognized by the State of Illinois Board of Education and is a member of the NCEA. The preschool follows NAEYC guidelines. Extended day care is available until 6 p.m. Please contact St. Barbara Elementary School for more information by calling them at (312) 326-6243.
