The 2016 Chicago Dragon Boat Race for Literacy is just around the corner and so is summer!  That means the Chicago Water Taxi begins its weekday and weekend routes to Chinatown.  This is a wonderful way to enjoy the beautiful sights along the Chicago River as you head to Chinatown for a day of eating, shopping and much more!

Saturday, June 25, 2016 | Ping Tom Memorial Park | 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Mark your calendars!  In less than a month, 30 dragon boat teams will compete on the south branch of the Chicago River in the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 Chicago Dragon Boat Race for Literacy on Saturday, June 25th in Ping Tom Memorial Park beginning at 8:00 am.  In addition to the races, there will be a Free Chinatown Trolley which will loop from the park through Chinatown during the event for everyone to enjoy.  There will also be exciting performances including Polynesian and Chinese Dancers, Southpaw from the Chicago White Sox at 10:00 am, Chinese drummers and martial arts demonstrations, children’s arts and crafts and more!  A portion of the event proceeds will be donated to local schools and organizations to support their literacy programs.

Asian American Heritage Month 2016

The Chinese American Community in Chicago hosted the Asian American Heritage Festival in Daley Plaza from May 16-20, 2016.  Exciting and vibrant cultural performances by talented Chicagoland Asian American performers were featured each day.  The Chinatown Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 Miss Friendship Ambassador Kelly Yee Uchima and First Runner Up Jessica Kung, participated as models in their beautiful silk brocade qipaos (Chinese dresses) during the cultural fashion show.  


Illinois Worker's Compensation Commission – Information Session 

The Insurance Compliance Division of the Workers’ Compensation Commission presented information regarding the importance of businesses providing workers compensation insurance for their employees. Gloria Jimenez, Outreach Coordinator, Robert Ruiz, Manager and Frank Capuzi, Chief Investigator from the Commission spoke on requirements for workers’ compensation insurance, consequences of not having insurance and enforcement.  For more information please call 312-814-6611 or visit

Jaslin Hotel Opening


Jaslin Hotel opened its doors on May 20th during their soft opening.  Travelers who arrived in Chicago Chinatown from different parts of the world were greeted by staff at this new one hundred and one room hotel as the first guests to this beautiful new landmark with great views of the city skyline.  The Grand Opening is scheduled in June 2016.

9th District CAPS Meetings Schedule

The 9th District Chicago Police Department Beat 914 CAPS Meetings are held every 4th Wednesday of the month at the Chinatown Library located at 2100 S. Wentworth from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm.  You are encouraged to attend to meet your beat officers, discuss problems and crime conditions and learn crime fighting strategies.

Wentworth Avenue Paving Notice

During the week of June 13th, the Department of Water Management is scheduled to mill, pave and stripe South Wentworth Avenue from West 22nd Place to West Alexander Street.  There will be temporary lane closures during the work, but both northbound and southbound Wentworth Avenue traffic will remain open during construction operations. Parking will be eliminated on these streets during work hours between 7 am – 4 pm.  Look for posted no parking signs.  CTA buses will continue to run northbound and southbound on South Wentworth Avenue.
