Happy New Year!
2016 has arrived and the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce is busily preparing for the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Monkey which occurs on Monday February 8, 2016. This year celebrates the Year of the Monkey. There are many different events and activities celebrating the Lunar New Year throughout the City of Chicago. Celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Monkey with the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday February 10, 2016 at MingHin Cuisine from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Specially prepared Lunar New Year dishes include Peking Duck, Double Lobster Stir Fried with Ginger & Green Onion, Stewed Black Chicken Soup with Chinese Herbs, Steamed Sea Bass and more will be prepared for your dining delight. There will be raffle prizes and “Lai See”/Red Envelope” Cash Drawings and chances to bid on Delta Air Line tickets to Asia. Our Miss Friendship Ambassadors will be in attendance and will perform song and dance. Be sure to wear something Chinese or something Red for good luck! Chinese New Year Parade – Sunday February 14, 2016 1:00 pm
Don’t miss the Chinese New Year Parade in Chinatown on Sunday February 14th which kicks off at 24th and Wentworth at 1:00 pm. Thousands of visitors descend upon Chinatown for the parade, lining up early to get a spot on the front line. There will be lion dancers, marching bands, floats, performers, a dragon dance and much more! Come early and dine on dim sum or stay after the parade to eat at one of over 70 restaurants and bakeries. Be sure to visit the many shops featuring Chinese gifts, clothing, teas, herbal products and more. There are two parking lots located on Wentworth Avenue at Archer. Street parking will be very limited. You are encouraged to take public transportation. The CTA Red Line stops in Chinatown and lets you off right by the parade route. See you there!
Chinatown Centennial Mural Dedication
Chinatown celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2012. Since that time, the community has worked on a Centennial mural with the Chicago Public Art Group to depict the history of Chinatown during these years. The mural has been completed and it was dedicated on Saturday January 23rd. Located on Archer Avenue between Clark Street and Wentworth Avenue; you can follow the history of Chinatown on both sides of Archer Avenue by viewing the tiles and photos.
Asian American Coalition of Chicago 33rd Annual Lunar New Year Festival – February 6, 2016
The Asian American Coalition of Chicago’s 33rd Annual Lunar New Year Festival will be held at the Hyatt Chicago Hotel on February 6, 2016 from 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm. The theme of this year is “Envision, Enlighten, Empower” and marks the beginning of the Year of the Monkey. The Chinese American Community is hosting the Festival this year. Chicago Chinatown Featured on TV and Radio

CRIS Radio – Chamber Executive Director Sharyne Moy Tu was a featured speaker on CRIS Radio January 19, 2016 at The Chicago Lighthouse. Ms. Tu mentioned Lunar New Year activities happening throughout the City of Chicago and provided an update of Chinatown and the exciting events and projects in 2016. Asian Pop-Up Cinema – Sophia's Choice
Asian Pop-up Cinema will feature the Chicago Premier of The Monkey King – Uproar in Heaven in 3D on February 17th at 7:30 pm at the AMC River East Theatre in Chicago. The film is a restored 3D version of the 1961 animation produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studios. Sophia’s Choice will be co-presenting the Arts & Culture DOC Fest with hosting partners Chicago History Museum and Chicago Botanic Garden February 19-20, 2016. ComEd warns customers of scam artists claiming to be a ComEd representative seeking payment. Recently small businesses and some residential customers have been contacted by these false representatives and told their service will be disconnected unless payment is made.
