Enjoying the Summer?
August is a perfect time to visit Chinatown and it’s easy to get to from all directions. A fun way is to take the Chicago Water Taxi! You can catch the water taxi to Chinatown from the Mag Mile and transfer at Ogilvie Station which will take you to Ping Tom Memorial Park. It’s just a short walk to restaurants and stores down Wentworth Ave and Cermak Road and Chinatown Square. You can take the CTA Red Line and exit at Cermak/Chinatown or several CTA buses right to our doorstep. Parking is available at two Chinatown parking lots located at Archer and Wentworth Avenue. Join the Chamber in welcoming UIC Chancellor Michael Amiridis at our Chinatown Business Luncheon on Wednesday August 26, 2015 from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm at the Phoenix Restaurant. Mr. Amiridis took office as Chancellor of the University of Illinois at Chicago in March 2015. He served from 2009-2015 as executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina at Columbia where he oversaw all academic functions. The Chancellor will be speaking about the University of Illinois at Chicago and its role in the neighborhood and beyond. Explore Chinatown! One Hour Walking Tour
Are you new to Chicago, have visitors in town, or a local who has not visited Chicago’s Chinatown? Well, you are in luck! The Chinatown Chamber of Commerce’s walking tour is great way to start your cultural adventure. Experience and learn about traditional Chinese culture from our local tour guide. Tours are scheduled on Fridays at 10:00 am. Cost per person is $10. Space is limited. Group tours available. Taste of Chinese Cuisine Wendella Boat Cruise w/Featured Fireworks
A fabulous time was had by all during the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce’s Taste of Chinese Cuisine Wendella Boat Cruise w/Featured Fireworks on August 5th. Sponsored by Wendella Boats, the cruise ship Wendella traveled from Ping Tom Memorial Park in Chinatown along the Chicago River to Lake Michigan. Guests enjoyed learning about the beautiful architecture along the river and across the city skyline while dining on specialty dishes from Phoenix Restaurant; Lao Sze Chuan; Emperor’s Choice Restaurant; Three Happiness Restaurant; Phoenix Bean; and Chiu Quon Bakery, The evening ended with a beautiful fireworks display at Navy Pier.
ABA Annual Meeting Guests Visit Chinatown
A tour of Chinatown for special guests attending the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago took place on July 30th. The evening started with a lovely ride down to Chinatown on the Chicago Water Taxi from the Magnificent Mile. Chamber tour guides led the group on a guided walking tour of Chinatown followed by a delicious dinner at Ming Hin Cuisine restaurant. Chinatown Centennial Art Mural
The two giant Chinatown Centennial Art Murals are almost complete! Artists Andy Bellomo and Bernard Williams, along with students from the After School Matters program have been working many hours during the last few weeks on the beautiful mural located on the north and south walls under the Metra railroad bridge on Archer between Clark and Wentworth. This mural celebrates Chinatown’s 100th Anniversary and will feature colorful artwork and photos from the past and present. Stay tuned for more information!
Chinatown Public Library
The new Chinatown Branch of the Chicago Public Library is in its final stages of construction. Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP, “The Chinatown Branch Library will provide a new civic, educational, and social hub for Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood, providing a much-needed public gathering place geared toward inclusive community activities and driven by technology-based learning.” Located at Archer and Wentworth, the library is scheduled to open in September 2015.
