Proposed Chinatown SSA

In business districts across the City, Special Service Areas (SSAs) provide enhanced services and programs that go beyond what is provided by the City of Chicago. In Northcenter, SSA proceeds provide litter pick up three times a week and snow removal after 2” of accumulation. In Andersonville, the SSA supports sustainability initiatives such as rebates to business that undertake environmentally sustainable improvements. Lakeview and other neighborhoods use SSA resources to fund a local gift card program and beautification. These are just some of the examples of programs that are made possible because of SSA funding.

Leaders from the Chamber of Commerce in Chinatown are proposing an SSA there to help provide services desired by the community. As the examples above illustrate, an SSA in Chinatown could be used to fund a wide range of additional services and/or physical improvements in the area. And, those services and improvements would be determined by local representatives of Chinatown. Only the property owners that benefit from the improvements would be assessed an additional tax that is used to pay for the services
