2017 Citywide Lunar New Year Events

The Chinese Lunar New Year begins on Saturday, January 28, 2017. This is the year of the Rooster in the Chinese zodiac. Rooster years include 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029, etc. If you were born in a year listed, then you are a Rooster! Chinese New Year is a time for families and friends to be together. Celebrations include Chinese New Year’s Eve dinner, giving away lucky money to children, sending Chinese New Year greetings, dragon and lion dancing and more. February 9, 201 7 @ 6:00 pm – Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce will host it’s 2017 Lunar New Year Dinner – Year of the Rooster at Phoenix Restaurant located at 2131 S. Archer Ave., Chicago, IL 60616. Traditional new year dishes will be served at the dinner. The evening starts off with the traditional lion dance that will kick off the dinner, then the US Postal Service will dedicate its 2017 Lunar New Year of the Rooster Stamp. February 5, 2017 @ 1:00 pm – Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade welcomes the “Year of the Rooster 4715” and celebrates Chicago Chinatown’s 105th Anniversary at Cermak and Wentworth. The parade features traditional lion and dragon dance teams, Ronald McDonald, colorful floats, marching bands and groups, and more. January 21, 2017 @ 3:00 pm – Chinese New Year Concert 2017 at the Chinatown Branch Chicago Public Library featuring performances by the Lincolnwood Chamber Orchestra with Philip Simmons, Music Director. January 21 and February 4, 2017 – Chicago Chinese Cultural Institute hosts it’s popular Chinese New Year Dumpling Making Dinner at Hing Kee Restaurant 2140 S. Archer Avenue Chicago IL 60616.
